Inspired by Andy Galsworthy’s sculptures, we wanted something monumental, permanent and in harmony with the landscape in our garden. We decided to commission an egg, built from stone from the garden. We enlisted Noel again, and he set about building it in December 2012.
Noel laid a concrete base and then on a short but sunny December day began to build the drystone structure. We wondered how Andy Galsworthy achieved a true egg shape and decided some concrete must be involved to achieve curving outwards from the base.
Over the next few days Noel steadily raised the height of the egg wall. What the image below conceals is the mystery at the heart of the Egg. In centuries to come archaeologists will be puzzled by the strange cult of bathroom worship in Bradwell. At the heart of the egg lies a 1950s primrose yellow bathroom suite. More cost effective as in-fill than hiring a skip.
