Nether Moor House hellebores

Classic plants for a winter garden, hellebores thrive at Nether Moor House. I have been building the collection for years, no named plants as they hybridise freely. The popular Oriental hybrids (Helleborus × hybridus) are hardy, but  H. niger is easily damaged by winter cold and wet so I watch for their re-emergence anxiously. Helleborus argutifolius  (Corsican Hellebore) grows freely in the cracks at the edge of the front path, softening the concrete edges.The stinking hellebore (Helleborus foetidus) is happy in deep shade and pops up all over the place.

Hazles Cross hellebores

At the beginning of 2021 I treated myself to plants from Hazles Cross Nursery in Staffordshire. Mike has had a passion for hellebores for over 30 years and now houses a national collection for helleborus species. A pre-arranged short visit to Hazles Cross stretched to two hours as we talked hellebores and discovered he had worked with Rod (my husband) at the Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield many years ago.
